Canadian kidlit author and illustrator friends, please remember that the sign-up to be included in the spreadsheet that will be sent out to educators to schedule school visits on I Read Canadian Day (November 4th) closes August 1st. If you haven't already signed up, don't miss your chance! (Educators, be sure to sign-up to get the spreadsheet later in August!) Thanks to the hospitality of the Queen City Yacht Club, we are having a wonderful time exploring the Toronto Islands. #sailing #lakeontario What would Bridge to Terabithia be without the rope swing carrying the characters into a fantastical world? Consider also the impact of the mockingjay in Hunger Games, the S on Superman’s chest, and Astrid’s earrings in Crazy Rich Asians. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore different types of symbolism and practice techniques for generating and incorporating symbolism into your writing in order to make your stories stand out in a crowded market. Let's celebrate Canadian books and authors! Checkout the full schedule of the inaugural virtual Canadian book festival at fictionfest.ca, and don't forget to sign up for my session on Thursday, June 25th at noon called Hooked on Books: What Kinds of Stories Turn Kids into Lifelong Readers? #bookfair #fictionfest #canada I’m only a couple chapters in, but so grateful a friend recommended it. #books #bookrecs Owning a sailboat sounds fun and glamorous, but our 45-year-old boat is a cranky old lady who requires a whole lot of TLC. This week we gave her a facelift by painting all of her decking—about 50 hours of labor (the taping all had to be done twice—once for the smooth surfaces and again for the non-skid surfaces). We also updated her with a new dodger, mended sails, and refinished cushions in the cockpit. Rain is forecast all week, but I’m hoping to give her interior a good cleaning next weekend and then enjoy a little R&R over the summer. ⛵️🌅 #sailing #sailboats I'm so excited about this new initiative for I Read Canadian Day (November 4th, 2026)!
